Yes, it was a very hot evening, and, yes, it was a hot, hot movie screening! It’s pretty impressive when a hospital can pull off an honest-to-goodness movie screening of a much-anticipated film before it opens around the country! I attended Hoag Hospital’s screening of “The Bourne Legacy” at Edwards Big Newport, thanks to United Artists Theatres, Universal, Regal Entertainment Group, and Edwards Theatres and Jim and Patti Edwards, who were the honorary chairs.

The fundraiser, now in its 25th year, is hosted by Hoag Hospital Foundation’s 552 Club, the oldest and largest of Hoag’s support groups. The hot, humid weather did not deter the record crowd of 1,400 attendees, with everyone gathering prior to the movie in the theater’s parking lot, where an array of local restaurants set up shop to serve some delicious foods. I didn’t get to taste everything, but some standouts included Gabbi’s famous ceviche, Newport Rib’s brisket sliders, Sage Restaurant’s famous gorgonzola and Granny Smith apple salad, Roy’s honey mustard short ribs and butter whipped potatoes, Muldoon’s’ mini burgers (there were lots of burgers and sliders), and Picante Martin’s enchiladas with all the trimmings. I always look for the Newport Firefighter’s sausage grill, this year with Captain Carlos Medina the grill master. His Louisiana semi-hot sausages were fabulous!

After gathering in the movie theater, event chair Mark Hardtke welcomed everyone, thanking the many people responsible for the effort, which ultimately netted $158,594 for Hoag Hospital Newport and Hoag Hospital Irvine. The three-item raffle saw a Four Seasons Resorts Lana’i at Manele Bay package, a Quattro Cafe dinner for eight in your home, and a Hoag Foundation package, which included tickets to the Christmas Carol Ball, Toshiba Golf Classic, the annual Awards Celebration & Dinner, and next year’s Summer Movie Screening. Delighted longtime Hoag supporter Janet Curci won the hospital package.

As to the movie, it was a hold-on-to-your-seat roller coaster experience, just what you encountered in previous Bourne films. And, yes, Jeremy Renner delivered!
