I confess. I’m a MAC girl. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m famous for my red lips, and MAC has more red lipsticks than I could ever wear! The ones I like the most are “MAC Red” and “Russian Red.” I use their fabulous “Cherry” lip pencil to line my lips and finish with a dash of their clear lip gloss (with no scent – hard to find!). At that point, I’m good to go for the day, no matter what happens!
That being said, I was delighted to attend the California launch of the makeup brand’s MAC Marilyn Monroe Collection at South Coast Plaza. Photos of the legendary actress lined make-shift walls at Jewel Court, and dozens of MAC makeup artists were ready to apply their skills on the waiting public, as it turned out on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. MAC’s Director of Makeup, Gregory Arlt, who is makeup artist to a bevy of stars, was asked to design a makeup collection on the occasion of Monroe’s untimely death 50 years ago on August 5, 1962. Addressing members of the media prior to the launch, Arlt said he decided to design three different looks, any of them suitable for the red carpet. He applied makeup to three different models to show the looks.
The first look was what he called “Ingenue,” which represented Marilyn when she was Norma Jeane Mortensen, before she became famous. It was a refreshed look, with a pale eye and barely colored lip. Next, was the “Love Goddess” look, which represented the sexy icon in her glory years – the cat eyes, the false eyelashes, the gorgeous red lips. Lastly, Arlt created a Marilyn look as he imagined she would look today if she were living called “Smoking Gray.” The eye treatment was not overt and the lip was muted.
You must drop by a MAC counter close to you and check out the latest colors for Fall, whatever look you feel you are. As for me, I’ll be trying those new reds Arlt created – “Deeply Adorned,” “Pure Zen,” “Love Goddess” (actually fuchsia), “Scarlet Ibis,” and “Charmed I’m Sure,” the one he used on the “Love Goddess” model. Fabulous! I’m hoping to see some more red lips out there. You must join the fun!
